The MG Metro 6R4 Rally Car was built in 1984, 6R4 stood for 6-cylinder, rally car, four-wheel-drive. With only a superficial resemblance to the Austin Metro road car, the 6R4 was built for the Group B rally category. It had a mid-mounted 3-litre V6 engine, four-wheel drive and the car was developed by the Williams Grand Prix team.
The car participated in the Lombard RAC rally in November 1985, driven by works driver Tony Pond. It finished in an excellent third, behind two Lancias. But the car had many teething troubles and before the car became competitive Group B was banned after several crashes involving drivers and spectators.
